Problem:

Many of today’s monitoring solutions depend on polling at predefined intervals using standards-based methods such as SNMP or proprietary methods. They depend on agents that are only capable of responding when the operating system and network stack are functioning normally. Polling large numbers of systems at frequent intervals can be resource intensive, thus it is common for polling intervals to be 10 to 20 minutes or even longer, extending the time for detection of problems. Furthermore, not all systems support all polling methods or all agents.

Effects of Problem:

When the operating system fails, polling solutions depend on time outs to tell the user that something is down. Often it takes more than one polling cycle to generate a problem notification and even then, the exact cause of the failure is unknown. In addition, warning events that occur between polls, may be detected too late to prevent failures. Decreasing the polling interval can help a little, but at the cost of more network traffic and more CPU utilization on the monitored system.

The Ideal Solution:

In an ideal world, we would know immediately when a problem occurs. We would know the precursor information allowing us to anticipate the failure and to remediate more rapidly. We would know the context the problem occurred within. We would also have persistent monitoring of all aspects of organizational information systems, from firewall to storage and from hardware device to application software not just those that support a polling solution.

TDI Solution:

The TDI solution is ConsoleWorks. ConsoleWorks monitors the hardware management interfaces, such as serial console, Insight Lights Out (“ILO”), Baseboard Management Controller (“BMC”), etc. constantly and in real time. This precludes the need for device resident agents or operating system functionality. In addition, advance warning error messages are received, immediately identifying the root cause which allows the administrator to address problems before they become failure. Anticipating and addressing problems before they occur and identifying them instantly as they occur allows for a reduction in mean time to repair.

ConsoleWorks provides the following:

Event Monitoring Event Management Compliance
  • Monitoring 24X7
  • Aggregated event monitoring from the entire enterprise
  • Real-time notification of events
  • Real -time logging of events
  • Goes a step beyond SNMP monitoring tools like HP OpenView, Tivoli, BMC Patrol to event management
  • (CIP 002-009, Sarbanes-Oxley, SAS 70, GLB, HIPAA and others)
  • Monitor and manage critical compliance events in addition to operations events
  • Real-time business intelligence surrounding compliance events
  • Understand the business intelligence of when an event occurred, where it occurred, who managed the event, and how the event was managed
