They depend on agents that are only capable of responding when the operating system and network stack are functioning normally. Polling large numbers of systems at frequent intervals can be resource intensive, thus it is common for polling intervals to be 10 to 20 minutes or even longer, extending the time for detection of problems. Furthermore, not all systems support all polling methods or all agents. Effects of Problem: When the operating system fails, polling solutions depend on time outs to tell the user that something is down. Often it takes more than one polling cycle to generate a problem notification and even then, the exact cause of the failure is unknown. In addition, warning events that occur between polls, may be detected too late to prevent failures. Decreasing the polling interval can help a little, but at the cost of more network traffic and more CPU utilization on the monitored system.
